Don't Compare Chapter 6 to Chapter 18

Do you ever look at someone else’s life and wish, hope or dream about what that person has? It’s not only the stuff that we compare though. Sometimes we compare a relationship or a career or character trait that we really want to have. We all have a tendency to compare our chapter 6 to someone else’s chapter 18.

There is nothing inherently wrong with having a goal to grow personally, learn more, develop better character, build great relationships, work hard at a career or even to have stuff that serves a useful purpose. It all comes down to the character of our heart. Do we desire those things because they move us closer to others to help their lives better? Or is it so we look good compared to others and as a result, feel better about ourselves? When we compare ourselves to others, we shift into ‘lack mentality’ – we are never content with what we have and where we are.

One of the major downfalls of our social media era, is that most of the time, what we see on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and Snapchat is someone’s highlight reel. It’s not what that friend’s life actually looks like most of the time – it’s just a highlight. Most of us try to ‘create’ an image on these websites – whether it’s reality or not. What can easily happen then, is we feel inadequate, or lacking something, or boring or unhappy, consciously and subconsciously comparing ourselves to others.

What do you envision for your life in a year, or 5 years or 10 years from now? Why do you want it to look like that? Is it for your own comfort? Does it look that way because someone else told you it would be good? Is it because it allows you to make someone else’s life better? Is it because that little voice inside you knows it’s the right thing to do? Think about it. Even better – write it down.
